Five friends of retirement age completed the Vertical Mile Challenge on May 3, hiking from the riverfront at the River Terraces Hotel and climbing 10.59 miles via the Rainbow Falls Trail in 4:41:51. The group included Ken Bechley, 70; Mike Trimble, 67; Steve Papke, 64; and Steve Duesler and Joe Morris, each 62. I don’t track ages for all who take on the challenge, but it is likely that Bechley is the oldest. They had the exact same moving time going up and coming down.
